A pluggable bed

The furniture in the UMAR Unit was made of solid wood by the Kaufmann carpentry. They completely avoided the use of chemical glues or sealants. The bed with the name "pluggable" is constructed in such a way that it is simply plugged together without any necessary fixation. Likewise, here the space consumption during the transport is a decisive advantage.

Acoustic panels made from used glass

For the Reapor acoustic panels, used glass from recycling garbage cans is processed into panels by the company Liaver in a thermal process without the use of binders. The mineral- and fiber-free Reapor has an open-pored structure that offers very good acoustic properties. After use, the panels can be very easily returned to the cycle via the same household glass recycling process.

Bathroom wall from recycled glass

The bathroom was fitted with the same glass panels from Magna Glaskeramik that were used for the kitchen countertop. These are made from recycled glass waste from recycling containers. The large panels are connected to the unit's primary structure via stainless steel brackets. Between them is a vapor barrier, which overlaps at the points of impact and which is not glued. The glass plates themselves are clamped together with dry seals so that no moisture or water can penetrate the substructure.

Bolted ceiling

The panels of the heating and cooling ceiling are made of matted aluminum, which can be completely recycled. The pipes are made of pure copper and are only screwed to the panels and not glued, as is usually the case. Also the felt strips, which serve for the acoustics, are only put in place so that the whole system can be reused or recycled sorted. The perforation of the panels serves the acoustics.

Buildings as material stores

While our traditional sources of raw materials are slowly running out, our cities can become the mines of the future. The idea of recycling plays a central role here: required materials are no longer extracted from a finite resource and disposed of after use, but are taken from a cycle for a certain period of time and returned to it. In this context, the building is seen as a material store that needs to be systematized as well as reliably and permanently cataloged. The vision is to design a 4D cadaster plan in which the materials in the building are documented so that they can be reused at the end of their life cycle.

Circular curtains

The curtains in the private rooms are a complete reinvention. The fabric used here was developed by the Pfister company and introduced to the market just before the unit was completed. This synthetic fabric is completely recyclable and in the end even completely biodegradable. At the same time, it also meets the usual requirements for fire protection and comfort. Pfister has thought the recycling idea through to the end – even the hangers are 3D printed from the same material and therefore do not have to be sorted out before recycling.

Copper frame representing the entire cycle

The portal frame formed around the window front consists of three different types of copper sheets applied to a wooden substructure. Shiny, as-new copper as well as various reused, already oxidized copper sheets were used to represent the entire lifecycle. Some of the sheets were dismantled at a hotel in Austria and reused here. The portal frame serves as weather protection.

Desks from tetrapacks

The desks in the north and south rooms were made from the same material as the wall in the unit's living room: tetrapacks (beverage cartons). The company ReWall in the USA shreds the composite material of paper, aluminum and polyethylene in the production of the panels and presses new panels from it in a hot pressing process. No further adhesive needs to be added during production, as the existing mixture bonds together to form a waterproof panel.

Doorknobs from a former bank

The doorknobs in the unit were provided by the Rotor company. Rotor specializes in reusing usable elements from demolished buildings. These bronze doorknobs come from a bank building in Brussels and were designed by Jules Wabbes in 1970. In the unit, they represent the great potential of the reuse of products as the smallest possible, local and effective cycle.

Insulation from jeans and hemp

In the unit, the organic insulation materials hemp and jeans were used. Both insulation materials are certified for indoor use.
The insulation made of hemp fibers from the Naporo company is stabilized with fibers made of corn starch – and can thus be completely composted in the biological cycle after its useful life. Hemp has very high insulation values and, thanks to the plant's own high silicate content, also a relatively high level of fire protection.
The product "Denim Insulation" is obtained from old jeans by the company Bonded Logic. A material that would otherwise end up on disposal sites is re-fiberized and then processed into felt-like mats. The textile industry produces enormous amounts of waste. The reuse of this resource as an insulating material therefore holds great potential.

Kitchen worktop made from recycled glass

The Magna Glaskeramik kitchen worktop is made of recycled glass, as we know it from our household waste recycling, and in this respect, it is 100% recycled. In the production process, a much lower temperature is used than, for example, in the production of window glass. This means that although the glass fragments fuse with each other, they remain visible as individual objects. In terms of color design, all the variants of white, green or brown that we know from bottled glass can be reproduced. The material can also be used as a façade panel or wall cladding, as is the case, for example, in the "Bathroom North" of the UMAR unit.

Planning for dismantling

In order to close the loops, it is important that dismantling is already taken into account during the planning stage. This concept is called "design for disassembly". It must be ensured that the materials can be separated from one another as easily as possible during dismantling in order to reduce material loss. This procedure enables the materials to be returned to a cycle and, for example, reinstalled in new buildings. It also means rethinking installation techniques. Today, this type of buildings is more expensive than conventional construction methods, but as resources become scarcer, it is becoming increasingly lucrative.

Pressed window front

One of the basic ideas of the UMAR Unit is that materials should not be irretrievably bonded together. This is normally done, for example, by using glue or silicon. The glazing of the unit was not glued, but pressed on from the outside and sealed by means of dry seals, which can be recycled when the unit is dismantled.
The glass has not been coated with a solar control coating in order to use the sunlight for the unit. After dismantling, the glass can be separated from foreign components such as films and returned to glass production.

Project: Intelligent heating control

Researchers from the ehub team used the UMAR unit to evaluate and further develop an innovative heating control system under real conditions. The unit was particularly suitable for this purpose because it has two occupied bedrooms that are comparable in structure and size. In one room, the ehub team's innovative controller provided the cooling while in the other room this was done by a conventional thermostatic. The result: the "smart" control system was able to better predict the behavior of the building and act with foresight. This not only saved energy, but also provided greater comfort.

Pure materials for the pipes

All infrastructure pipes of the UMAR Unit are routed under the ceiling in pure materials. The fresh water pipes are made of pure copper, the sprinkler system as well as the pre-installation of the solar heating system are made of untreated steel. All couplings, which became necessary due to the modular construction at the joints of the modules, are designed as screw sockets so that they can be easily released again during dismantling. The various installations were completely pre-installed in the factory and connected on site.

Radio-controlled lighting

The lighting concept was developed in cooperation with the Nimbus Group GmbH. The illumination is mainly realized by ceiling lights. The luminaire head of the LED ceiling lights consists of an aluminum case and a diffuser surface made of polycarbonate. The luminaire head and the connected arm can be flexibly aligned so that the lighting can react to the respective situation. All aluminum surfaces have been brushed both by machine and by hand. No further surface treatment has been applied.
The lighting and the control of the external sun protection can be operated by battery-free radio switches. The necessary current for the signal is generated solely by the kinetic energy introduced when the switch is pressed. Such radio switches help to save material because no drilling is required and no cables need to be laid.

Rented carpet

The carpet of the company Desso contains two innovations: On the one hand, it was developed in such a way that all raw materials can be separated by type and subsequently recycled into the same product. Secondly, it represents the development of new economic concepts. Since Desso can recycle the raw material almost endlessly, the company does not sell it permanently but rents it. After use, the carpet is returned to the company. This means that you only pay for the use of the carpet, without owning the material itself. This is an idea that could also be very useful in other areas, such as lighting.

Rock wool insulation

In the outer walls of the UMAR Unit, non-combustible insulation was required due to the special location in the NEST building. Rock wool is used here. The Flumroc company manufactures this wool from 100% local Swiss stone – and can also recycle it completely. The insulation mats used in the walls of the unit can thus be completely returned to the technical cycle when they are dismantled.

Seven modules

The Urban Mining & Recycling unit was completely prefabricated from seven wooden modules and pushed into its current position on-site within one day. Afterwards, the modules only needed to be connected on the construction site.
Deconstruction is also an important element of the UMAR Unit. Materials must be able to be separated from one another again as easily and as purely as possible in the sense of circular economy. Since the modules are still on a rail system, they can be easily removed from NEST in a few years.

Stone wall from building rubble

The revolving wall in the living area of the unit consists of a frame with steel rods. Bricks with holes were threaded onto these. This means that the bricks did not have to be glued together with mortar, which is in line with the basic idea of the unit. In addition, this method has the advantage that the bricks can easily be removed or replaced.
The stones are produced by the startup StoneCycling from mineral construction waste. In terms of volume, this group of waste is the largest and most difficult in terms of environmentally friendly construction. In addition, the products offer a high aesthetic value, since the history of the stone is visible. The product in the UMAR unit is called "Nougat". The brown parts in the bricks, for example, were obtained from former bricks.

The wall in the living room is made of materials from the technical cycle. The basic panel is made of recycled tetrapacks (beverage cartons).
For the production of the panels, the company Rewall shreds the composite material made of paper, aluminum, and polyethylene and then presses it into panels using a hot pressing process. No further adhesive needs to be added during production, as the existing mixture binds together to form a waterproof panel. Although this is down-cycling, since it is not possible to recover pure materials from the board afterward, using the material is certainly a better option than throwing it away. However, the material cannot only be used for the wall. In the North and South rooms, for example, it is also used for the desk surface.

The basic idea of Urban Mining & Recycling

The unit is based on the thesis that all resources required for the production of a building must be completely reusable, recyclable, or compostable.
To achieve this, three requirements must be met: 1) All materials and products must be separable from each other again. 2) Every detail, every product and every construction must therefore be critically questioned before it is installed. 3) It must be possible to return all materials to the biological or technical cycle, sorted by type. To this end, they must not be irreversibly bonded together - for example, by being glued together.

When returning materials to a cycle, a distinction is made between the following three processes (according to EU Directive 2008/98/EC):

Reuse
Any process by which products or components that are not waste are reused for the same purpose for which they were originally intended.

Reutilization
Any process whose main result is to put waste to a useful use within the facility or the wider economy by replacing other materials that would otherwise have been used to fulfill a specific function, or by preparing the waste to fulfill that function.

Recycling
Any recovery process by which waste materials are reprocessed into products, materials or substances either for the original purpose, or for other purposes. It includes the reprocessing of organic materials, but does not include energy recovery and reprocessing into materials intended for use as fuel or for backfilling.

The problem of finite resources

Our available resources are finite and will eventually run out. The question is how and by what means will we build the cities of the future without further depleting or polluting our natural environment. The built environment accounts for more than a third of the energy consumption and emissions, and more than half of the resource consumption and mass waste generation. It is therefore crucial to find solutions to build in a way that is both high-quality and sustainable. The Urban Mining & Recycling Unit demonstrates such a solution by taking buildings as temporary resource – or material – storage facilities.

The technical and the biological cycle

In the UMAR Unit, all materials are to be returned to a cycle. A distinction is made between the technical and the biological cycle.
The technical cycle includes all materials and products that consist of raw materials taken from the earth's crust, such as petroleum-based plastics or metals. At the end of a cycle, these materials or products can be reused or separated and recycled. The biological cycle includes all materials or products created by photosynthesis and represents a much larger metabolism.
While in the technical cycle, for example, the plastic polyethylene must always be reused as such, in the biological cycle an untreated wooden beam can rot and provide the nutrients for fungal insulation.
The UMAR unit demonstrates that it is possible today to construct circular. A study by Madaster indicated: UMAR is 96% circular.

Urban Mining & Recycling: Circular construction

The Urban Mining & Recycling unit has one prime goal: All resources required for the construction of a building must be completely reusable, recyclable or compostable. The idea of closed cycles plays a central role in this unit: The construction materials are not consumed and later on disposed of; rather, they are temporarily withdrawn from their technical or natural cycle and returned when they are not needed anymore.

Wall from fungus structures

The wall in the bedroom is certainly one of the most novel building material innovations of the unit. It consists of a root network of fungal structures (mycelium). This represents a very dense organic network, which can be used as panel material of a substructure or insulation material. The fungal hyphae (roots) are first mixed with a source of nutrition – in this case, recycled waste wood chips. After a growth period of a few days, the root network is heated to 60-70 degrees Celsius, which causes the organism to die. What remains is a dense fiber material that can be used in various ways. In the present case, this serves as an insulating carrier plate for the clay plaster. The material is fully compostable.

Wall from polyethylene

The wall surfaces of the bathroom were covered with large-sized plastic panels made of recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) panels. The material, made by Smile Plastics, is obtained from recycled plastic. In this case, plastic lids from beverage bottles were used. Different colors are combined to create the marbling. The large panels are screwed to the primary structure of the unit. Between them, a vapor barrier is applied, which overlaps at the joints and is not glued. The plastic panels themselves pressed and clamped together with dry seals so that no moisture or water can enter the substructure.

The base plaster as well as the finishing plaster are made of clay and a biological fiber reinforcement was used. All materials from the vapor barrier on are part of the biological cycle and are completely recyclable or compostable.
